So, reading in my local newspaper that the DoJ commissioned a study to determine why police are more likely to decide that accusations of rape are unfounded than any other type of crime. (aside: as encouraging as it is that the DoJ commissioned this study, ACK!) Apparently, along with, "She wasn't crying profusely enough," (safety tip: stock onions) police are more likely to dismiss allegations if the accused is someone the victim knows. Which, dear god, police, are you mentally deficient? (aside: if the victim is, good luck getting a prosecution!)
Since only about 14 to 20% of rapes committed are stranger rapes, (and this number may be high, since stranger rapes are generally reported, while acquaintance rapes often are not) the police would be predisposed to dismiss somewhere around 85% of all rapes! (Safety tip: don't get raped. Good luck!)
However, this got me thinking about Kalinara and Ragnall's damned lists. ( Read more... )
