You may or may not know that there's been problems with the pilot episode of Leverage leaking onto the internet. A copy of it fell off a truck near me, and obviously I had to watch it to make sure it wasn't a ransom demand for the safe return of a little puppy, gone tragically astray. I know some people are hoping 'The Middleman' gets a fandom, I'm not really feeling it, but Leverage totally could. Pretty, competent, slightly crazy people with a skewed morals, pursuing justice outside the law. Pasting from harriet_spy now, because I'm bad at actors: "Nate is Timothy Hutton, Eliot is Christian Kane, Alec is Aldis Hodge [Voodoo from FNL], Sophie is Gina Bellman from Coupling."

I'm just saying! Things fall off trucks! Keep a lookout.

Writers! Writing is wanted!

Jenn from reappropriate is putting together Girl-Wonder newsletter and is looking for content. I know there's some comic content that appears intermittently on my flist that deserves to be shared with a wider audience. Get your geek on. (girlness optional.)

Recently, and not so recently, I've come across a couple of stories, or had them pointed out to me, within greater fandom, where the history or culture of marginalized groups was employed to make a story more exotic or interesting, with the result the story was offensive.

So I'm trying to think of how one can avoid this. Because on the one hand, I don't think we want stories all about white people in white-land steeped in white-culture, but on the other hand, dipping into someone else's culture for shiny colours to dab on one's story is problematic.

These are some guidelines I've tentatively put together for my own use. I'm indebted to many people on my friendslist for helping to articulate this, for challenging my assumptions, and for pointing out things I've overlooked. I'd appreciate anyone's critique or suggestions.

Why I will always love fandom more than I am frustrated by it.

The idea of cutting up books makes me go "Aaaa! Aaaa!" and flail my arms, but these are totally awesome, despite.

So, in some cases, fannish migration is really freakin' obvious. Like that thing where everyone got disappointed by Smallville and then Stargate: Atlantis showed up? So I decided to try to track fan movement. This is obviously not going to be true for one person in particular, but rather in the aggregate (if at all). Black rectangles are the span of canon. Some canons will seem to overlap which didn't, because I went by years rather than seasons. Red lines are fandom persistence. Sometimes a fandom expires before a canon, although I'm aware that many die-hards hung on until the end. I stopped tracking the persistence of the fandom when the canon ended.

I was not involved in very many of these fandoms at all, so this is merely my outsider impression. This is mostly a rough to prove it could be done.

As is perhaps obvious, I don't have flowchart software, but I'm very interested in your thoughts, and will attempt to incorporate corrections and suggestions.
